From optical specification to acceptance

An optical brief should define both the component and the evidence needed to accept it.

Define the optical function

State the wavelength range, imaging or illumination function, available envelope and critical interfaces. Establish whether the discussion begins with a specification or an existing drawing.

Include the mounted assembly

POG documents alignment turning for mounted lenses and optical metrology for system alignment. Mechanical references and centring requirements should be part of the brief when the optical performance depends on an assembled system.

Agree the evidence

Identify the measurements and records required at acceptance. POG lists wavefront, MTF and transmission measurement methods; the suitable method and acceptance values are project-specific.

This note helps prepare a technical brief. Product performance and application suitability require project-specific confirmation.
